Artist Bio
S. Raelle is a Castlemaine born artist who employs obsessive introspection as a generative, daily practice. Her work is dedicated to exploring the philosophical and emotional connections between personal trauma and the elemental landscape, seeking the primal act of painting as a means to cosmic understanding. Rooted in the concept of hauntology the enduring presence of the past Raelle's work explores this liminal space of psychological landscapes, suggesting that memory is not merely internal but something held by the world around us.
Artist Statement
Through the creation of a surface inspired by the elemental landscape, S. Raelle utilizes rust pigments, and dense layering to produce a luminosity in which the figure is embedded. This materiality captures the warmth that lingers, utilizing oxidized tones to suggest an earth that has absorbed and held the memory of the sun. Moreover, the work intends for the figure to possess a delicate, wandering nature, reflecting the lethargy found within a heat-induced haze. This explores the concept of the canvas as a liminal space, a site where the fundamental questions of the world and the self are held
