Artist Bio

Quah is a Malaysian-born creative who lives and works in Naarm / Melbourne. Her artistic output is diverse, ranging from traditional means like oil on canvas to more experimental outcomes like prints on garments. She has always had a love of Pop Art, and often considers our role as a consumer of images as well as culture. The subject matter she captures is usually personal in many respects, which she believes has a way of eliciting a greater sense of relatability with the viewer.

Artist Statement

These prints are a result of an intensive, week-long foray into a variety of printmaking methods. Represented here are a monotype (a unique print), and two linocut prints made with vastly different media and substrate. The works aimed to test the basics of subtractive colour, while pushing the possibilities of imagery and form in a strictly two-dimensional plane. Two of the works were made on heavier paper with the help of a printing press in a studio, while the print on thinner Japanese paper was done entirely by hand at home. The goal was not to achieve perfect reproductions, but to create prints that clearly indicate the artist's hand (literally and notionally). In hopes of sparking new interest into a visual art form that can sometimes be seen as outdated, a little too traditional or inaccessible, Quah's pieces seek to be loud, wicked, and unabashedly flawed.
