Artist Bio

Sunny Tandoc combines their visual arts and community service practices to explore themes of coming-of-age, curiosity, the mundane and human connection, informed by their experience as a queer Filipinx/o-Australian with lived experience of mental health. Through vivid colour palettes, gestural mark-making and playful textures, Sunny creates emotionally resonant works that foster reflection and dialogue.

Artist Statement

Adolescence is often framed as the definitive period of transformation and self-discovery, with summer break or holidays positioned as a symbolic threshold between becoming and being. But what if coming-of-age never stops? "the unknown doesn't scare me anymore" explores coming-of-age as an ongoing process rather than a fixed moment in youth. Through moments of inconspicuous stillness and the long naming conventions of the soundtrack of their pubescent years (2000-2010s pop punk), Sunny reflects on joy, contentment, softness and nostalgia; while acknowledging the emotional complexity of growing older and moving beyond socially defined youth (ages 15-24). Rather than mourning the end of this stage of life, they reclaim small, ordinary pleasures as acts of renewal from quiet lunch breaks in the intense summer heat to spontaneous beach trips. These moments suggest that even in adulthood, the summer is still yours to claim.
